Makurdi, Benue State – June 3, 2025

In response to the escalating violence and daily killings in Benue State, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has officially relocated to Makurdi, the state capital, to personally oversee military operations aimed at restoring peace and security in the region.

The move comes amid growing concerns over relentless attacks on rural communities by suspected herders and armed militia groups, which have resulted in numerous deaths, injuries, and the destruction of homes, leaving thousands displaced.

According to reports, Lt. Gen. Oluyede left Abuja on Tuesday morning, accompanied by his Principal Staff Officers (PSOs) and other top military officials from Army Headquarters, to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the deteriorating security situation.

Military sources confirmed that the Army Chief has directed the immediate deployment of additional troops to strategic locations across Benue State to intensify the fight against the criminal elements wreaking havoc in the state.

While in Makurdi, General Oluyede is expected to convene high-level strategy meetings with operational and unit commanders. These meetings will focus on reviewing ongoing operations and crafting decisive plans to end the senseless killings and restore law and order across affected communities.

The Army’s latest intervention is seen as a strong signal of its commitment to protect lives and ensure lasting peace in Benue State.
