NiMET workers, after a meeting with Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, have called off their strike action
Workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) have suspended their strike action following the intervention of the Federal Government.
The industrial action, which had paralysed flight operations across the country for two consecutive days, was called off after a closed-door meeting in Abuja with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.
NiMET employees had embarked on the strike in protest against poor working conditions, including the non-implementation of the national minimum wage, the exclusion of some staff from previous allowances, and the neglect of vital training programmes.
The high-level meeting, convened to address the impasse, was attended by the Director General of NiMET, officials from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and representatives of key aviation unions including the National Union of Transport Employees, the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees, the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals, and the National Union of Air Transport Employees.
Flight operations at major airports, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, were severely disrupted, leaving passengers stranded and schedules in disarray.
The suspension of the strike is expected to restore normalcy to domestic flight operations, while discussions continue on the full resolution of the workers’ demands.
