Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday staged a major protest outside the office of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, demanding the immediate implementation of a N70,000 minimum wage for Area Council workers, teachers, and health personnel.

Hundreds of workers carrying placards marched peacefully from Labour House in Central Area to the Minister’s office located in Area 11, Abuja. The protesters raised chants and songs expressing their dissatisfaction over the delayed wage increase and called for urgent government action.
Tensions heightened when armed police officers sealed the main gate of the Minister’s office, barring the protesters from entering the premises. Despite the heavy security presence, the NLC protesters remained resolute, insisting that Minister Wike personally come out to address their grievances.
Attempts by a management staff member, Mandate Secretary Lawrence Garki, to speak with the demonstrators were met with boos and chants of “thief, thief,” signaling the workers’ deep frustration and distrust.
The protesters also demanded the resignation or removal of the six Area Council Chairmen, accusing them of neglecting the plight of council workers.
As the standoff continues, the NLC has vowed to maintain the blockade of the office and prevent staff movement until their demands are acknowledged and acted upon.
This demonstration highlights growing unrest among local government workers in Abuja over wage issues and the broader struggle for improved working conditions in the FCT’s Area Councils.
