Mokwa, Niger State – June 3, 2025

Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has paid a condolence visit to the Niger State Government following the tragic flood disaster that recently struck Mokwa Local Government Area, claiming several lives and displacing numerous residents.

Mr. Obi, accompanied by his team, was received at the Niger State Government House by Deputy Governor Comrade Yakubu Garba, who stood in for Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.

In a show of solidarity and compassion, the former governor donated the sum of ₦20 million to support relief and recovery efforts for affected families. He also offered prayers for the repose of the souls lost and extended heartfelt sympathies to bereaved families and displaced residents.

“This is not just about politics—it’s about our shared humanity,” Obi said. “My heart goes out to all the families who have lost loved ones, and I urge both the government and private sector to continue to support victims in every possible way.”

Commendation and Call for Climate Resilience

Mr. Obi commended the Niger State Government for its swift response to the crisis and efforts to provide temporary shelter and aid to those affected. However, he also used the occasion to call for more proactive measures to mitigate the devastating impacts of climate-related disasters in Nigeria.

“Natural disasters like flooding are becoming more frequent and deadly. We need to start investing in early warning systems, better urban planning, and long-term climate resilience strategies,” he noted.

The visit by Peter Obi was warmly received by residents and government officials alike, who appreciated his gesture and leadership by example.

The devastating flood in Mokwa has once again brought the challenges of disaster preparedness to the forefront, underscoring the urgent need for collective action across all levels of government and society.
