Vatican City – In a solemn and historic moment at the heart of Catholicism, the President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria led the nation’s delegation to the Vatican for the burial ceremony of His Holiness, Pope Francis. Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Nigerian people, the Senate President paid tribute to the late pontiff during the Lying-in-State held inside the majestic St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

The Senate President, visibly moved by the occasion, expressed deep condolences on behalf of Nigeria, describing Pope Francis as “a global spiritual father, a symbol of peace, humility, and compassion,” whose passing leaves a great void not only in the Catholic Church but also in the broader global community.

“In life, Pope Francis was a voice for the poor, a bridge-builder between faiths, and a tireless advocate for social justice, equity, and dialogue. Today, as he lies in state in this sacred place, we honor his memory and the indelible legacy he leaves behind,” the Senate President said.

The Nigerian delegation joined other world leaders, dignitaries, and religious figures in paying their last respects to the late Pope, whose death marks the end of a transformative papacy that spanned over a decade. Pope Francis, known for his reformist stance and dedication to interfaith harmony, had a profound impact on global diplomacy, environmental advocacy, and efforts to protect the dignity of all human beings.
Nigeria, with one of Africa’s largest Catholic populations, maintained a close relationship with the Holy See under Pope Francis’ leadership. His numerous calls for peace in Nigeria, particularly in times of internal strife and insecurity, endeared him to many Nigerians across religious lines.
The Senate President also signed the condolence register at the Vatican and conveyed the heartfelt sympathies of Nigeria’s government and citizens to the College of Cardinals and the global Catholic faithful.
The passing of Pope Francis marks a significant chapter in contemporary religious history. His funeral is expected to draw millions of mourners from across the globe, as tributes continue to pour in from leaders of nations, faiths, and civil society.
