The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has condemned the recent gruesome killing of 16 traveling hunters in Edo State, who were mistaken as kidnappers.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu who expressed deep concern over the incident in a statement, called for the urgent need for effective enforcement of the laws and respect for human rights of Nigerians

While calling on the government to take concrete steps in preventing such incidents in the future,
Ojukwu demanded that all perpetrators be fished out and brought to justice.

The Commission also commended Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo for suspending the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, Friday Ibadin, and banning all illegal vigilante groups operating in the State

Ojukwu emphasized that the right to life and freedom of movement as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution has been grossly violated by the incident, noting that the Commission will continue to advocate the promotion and protection of human rights which is paramount in national development.
