UIO National Leader, Major General Ataguba (rtd.), advocates issue-based politics, respect for political freedom and collective bargaining.

The Ukomu Igala Organization (UIO) Worldwide has urged political leaders and stakeholders in Kogi East to embrace peaceful political participation, strengthen unity and protect the collective interests of the Igala and Bassa people ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The organisation made the call in a statement by its National Leader, Major General James Alilu Ataguba (rtd.), PhD, who emphasised that political differences should not be allowed to undermine the shared heritage, dignity and development aspirations of the people.

Ataguba noted that the organisation’s leadership and other concerned stakeholders had spent over a year working to bridge political divisions, rebuild trust and strengthen unity across Kogi East.

He urged politicians and their supporters to respect the constitutional rights of citizens to associate with and support political parties of their choice without intimidation, harassment or violence.

Expressing concern over reported incidents of political thuggery in Ejule, Ofu Local Government Area, the UIO leader warned against the use of force in political contests, insisting that elections should provide an opportunity for candidates to present their ideas, achievements and development plans to the electorate.

He also cautioned political groups against using the collective identity of the Igala nation, Kogi East or the Bassa people to legitimise individual political endorsements without broad-based consultations.

According to him, the region’s political influence should be built on unity, strategic thinking and meaningful engagement rather than fragmented interests.

On preparations for the 2027 elections, Ataguba disclosed plans for a non-partisan team of qualified and trusted leaders to examine the manifestos, track records and development commitments of candidates seeking the support of the people.

He added that representatives of presidential candidates would be invited to present their principals’ proposals on issues affecting Igala and Bassa communities, providing an opportunity for direct engagement with respected elders.

The initiative, he explained, is aimed at ensuring that political support is guided by credible commitments to development rather than partisan sentiment or unfulfilled promises.

Ataguba further called on the people of Kogi East to demand accountability, reject political violence and maintain mutual respect regardless of party affiliation.

He stressed that the region’s common interests in peace, dignity and socio-economic progress should remain central to political decisions as the country approaches another election cycle.

The UIO leader concluded by urging Igala and Bassa sons and daughters to remain united, deliberate and strategic in their political engagements, noting that collective action and constructive negotiations were essential to advancing the region’s interests ahead of 2027.
